Thousands of species face extinction as a result of human activities. In this course we will explore the field of conservation biology, which has emerged in response to this unprecedented crisis. By the end of this course, you will (1) understand the basic ecological and evolutionary principles that underlie the diversity of life on Earth; (2) appreciate the impact of your species on the distribution and abundances of other species on the planet and in your backyard; and (3) be familiar with the major solutions to the problem of biodepletion. Furthermore, in the laboratory part of the course, in partnership with area conservation agencies, you will have designed, conducted, and presented a piece of original research that contributes to the field of conservation biology. |
